Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment (SMAT)

SMAT is an advanced structural materials processing technology for obtaining desired mechanical properties (high strength and high ductility) with refined grains and / or microstructures in nano-scale of metallic materials. The SMAT machines at CityU can treat materials with varied geometries and dimensions, such as:

- tube/cylinder with diameter ranging from 14 mm to 25 mm, and 65 mm length,

- thin wire up to diameter of 1 mm and 65 mm length,

- flat plate with length or diameter ranging from 10 mm to 70 mm

with different treatment conditions.
